Are You Who You Really Are?
Have you ever paused to consider if you are the same person when you are alone versus when you are with others?
Many of us like to believe we are consistently ourselves, but the truth is that our behavior tends to shift depending on our surroundings. We may act more reserved around strangers or more relaxed with close friends. We often adjust our actions to fit social norms and strengthen our relationships.
When we go to church, for example, we may present a more polished version of ourselves. This is perfectly understandable; we are social beings who respond to our environment.
Think about how odd it feels when a stranger in a store talks loudly about something private on their phone. We notice these discrepancies in behavior, which is especially evident in today's youth.
Young people often navigate two worlds: the adult world filled with expectations, chores, and social pressures, and the world of their peers, where they explore their identities, beliefs, and anxieties.
As mentors, our hope is that these young individuals can discover a life of faith as they mature. Just like us, they need to learn how to be consistent in their beliefs and actions.
Currently as a Church, we are in sermon series about ordinary people and our extraordinary God, we can ask ourselves why some people maintain their faith regardless of who is around them, while others struggle to do so.
People with integrity often capture our admiration.
What Does Integrity Really Mean?
Integrity is a term we frequently use, but what does it truly signify? At its core, integrity describes a person whose values, actions, and beliefs remain consistent, regardless of the situation.
This means that you are the same at church, at home, or while grabbing coffee. It requires having a strong moral compass that does not waver with circumstances.
Yet, maintaining integrity can be tougher than ever in a world that pressures us to conform.
While honesty is a key aspect of integrity, it goes deeper. Integrity is about living by truth, even when no one is watching.
Take Inspiration from Obadiah's Story
Let’s examine the story of Obadiah from the Bible. He served King Ahab, a king infamous for his wickedness, surrounded by corrupt advisors and false prophets. Nonetheless, Obadiah remained faithful to God, risking his life to protect God's prophets.
Obadiah’s story serves as a powerful reminder that faithfulness is not dictated by our environments. It is about the inner strength to uphold your beliefs even in the face of lies and corruption.
His workplace circumstances didn’t sway his faith. By steadfastly supporting God’s people, he taught us what real integrity looks like.
So, how can we emulate Obadiah’s integrity in today's world?
Establishing Your Core Values
To live with integrity, start by identifying your core values. What truly matters to you? Is it honesty, kindness, humility, courage, or wisdom? Once you define these values, your actions will naturally align with them.
For instance, if you value honesty, you might choose to speak the truth even when it’s difficult. A 2022 study showed that 93% of individuals believe honesty is a crucial aspect of integrity. By anchoring yourself to your values (rooted in Scripture), you become less susceptible to outside pressures, allowing you to live authentically.
The Importance of Accountability
Implementing these values often requires accountability. Surround yourself with individuals who encourage you to uphold your beliefs. Seek out a community that shares your values, and don't hesitate to lean on them during tough times.
For example, if you struggle with honesty, sharing your goals with a trusted friend can motivate you to achieve them. Engaging in discussions or debates over your ideals can solidify your convictions and help challenge any doubts.
The Value of Alone Time
Self-reflection is essential for maintaining integrity. In today's fast-paced environment, we often overlook the importance of solitude. These moments are vital to reconnecting with our thoughts and feelings without outside influence.
Devote time to evaluate your choices, revisit core values, and seek guidance through prayer. According to a 2023 study, individuals who engage in regular self-reflection report a 30% increase in their ability to stick to their values.
This practice grounds you, reminding you of your commitments amidst life's chaos.
Steps to Foster Integrity
Be Honest with Yourself: Start by recognizing your true self and beliefs. Self-awareness is the foundation of integrity.
Embrace Vulnerability: Admitting your challenges does not make you weak. It demonstrates authenticity and opens the door for genuine connections.

Social Accountability: Share your goals with someone you trust. Celebrate your progress together, reinforcing the commitment to uphold your values.
Set Firm Boundaries: If certain situations lead you away from integrity, establishing boundaries is critical for protecting your values.

In a world filled with shifting expectations, maintaining integrity is a powerful testament to your faith. Like Obadiah, we can choose to serve others and stay true to our beliefs, regardless of our environment.
By identifying core values, fostering accountability, reserving time for self-reflection, and embracing honesty, we can cultivate lives rich in integrity.
Remember, it is absolutely possible to live by truth, even when alone. When we commit to doing so, we open ourselves to experiencing the extraordinary nature of God.
The road may not always be easy, but the rewards of leading a life grounded in integrity far outweigh the challenges.
Let’s strive to be the same people in all situations, honoring our faith, relationships, and commitments. Together, we can form a community of ordinary individuals serving an extraordinary God.
